July 20, 2015 iPad Club Meeting

The July iPad Club is scheduled for Monday, July 20 at 1:30 pm at the Chatham Community Center.

• Updates to the iPad and iPhone include iOS 8.4 and iOS 9. Find out why you should update your devices ASAP and what the changes are.

• Apple Music - Find out why you should try it out for free for three months, and how you can set it up so it will not automatically renew if you do not want to subscribe.

• New fun toys for my devices. I read a lot of tech news these last months and think I have found two gadgets that have a true Wow Factor!

Pencil is a very fancy stylus costing $40 to $60 that allows you to do wondrous things in your drawing apps, especially Paper 53, a free app with all free in-app purchases. if there are artists in the group, you have to get this on Amazon and do a program for us. I am NOT an artist, as you will see, but I will demonstrate how this smart pencil works.

Cardboard from Google is a Virtual Reality viewer that works with iPhones. VR is the next big thing that is coming, or rather, already here. I will demonstrate this tool and talk about how much fun it is to take an Urban Hike in Paris, Rome, NYC, or Venice, visit famous museums, view a Mask exhibit, and enjoy a wonderful Kaleidoscope in 3D.  Innovators are now, producing movies in HD 3D for VR viewers, and many games are coming out shortly to play on these viewers. Yes, it gave me motion sickness, even though it is only made of cardboard.

Heads up for August. The August 17 iPad Club meeting will be august!  IPad and book clubs get on well together. Joan Greene and Lane Byrd will present all the many resources they have found to enhance your book reading.

Hope to see you all this summer. IPad and iPhone classes will resume in September. Think about some classes you would be interested in attending.

Notes on Podcast and Overdrive on the iPad

The March 16 iPad Club featured Ron Clark talking about Podcast on the iPad. The notes for podcasts and additional information on setting up Overdrive are at the link below. Overdrive is an app that gets you to the CLAMS catalogue of eBooks and Audio books so you can read or listen right on your iPad to materials borrowed from our library.

Taking a Video on the iPhone 6 of slow falling snow using the slo mo setting.

I think the Slo mo setting on the iPhone 6 video camera worked well. You have to watch this long video, relax into it, and you will see the occasional snow flakes come drifting down like a mediation.

This winter has provided lots of opportunity to find new ways of shooting photos of snow. I could never get falling snow to be visible in any of my still photos, no matter what the settings or edits. Using the slo mo video setting has had the best results so far.
